The characters in the book are well thought out and developed, if sometimes fantastical, adding to the possibility that all these adventures *could* have happened. Russ weaves a storyline that is masterful and engaging, and reads more like Kate is in the room relating her exploits in person.

Somewhere on the road to fame and fortune, she manages to find out what really matters. The adventures she encounters and the side trips she is assigned lead Kate into a world of comically dangerous intrigue. Drawn to the glamour of the California Gold Coast and the celebrity chef who entices her to leave home and family, Kate diligently packs her worldly belongings into her car, along with her companion parakeets, and heads west. The League for the Suppression of Celery is a brilliantly original story of the humorous coming of age of our heroine, Kate.
